Scope: It is the purpose of this document to present design and maintenance information that will provide a basis for satisfactory and safe aircraft electrical system installations. This document is not intended to be a design handbook. However, the requirements for safety extend so thoroughly throughout electrical systems that few areas of such systems are untouched by this document. It is recognized that individual circumstances may alter the details of any design. It is therefore important that this document not be considered mandatory, but be used as a guide to good application of electrical installation design and maintenance. Methods, techniques, practices and component selection shall be as prescribed in the current maintenance manual, in instructions provided by the current manufacturer, or shall be as specifically approved by the FAA Representative. Aircraft electrical systems have rapidly increased in importance over a number of years until they now are used for many fuctions necessary to successful aircraft operation. An ever increasing number of these functions are critical to the safety of the aircraft and it occupants. The greatly increased power available in aircraft electrical systems is another factor in aircraft safety. These considerations make it essential that aircraft electrical design and maintenance practices be carefully considered from the standpoint of safety and reliability. This document is intended to provide recommendations for practices which will contribute towards this end.
